Leeds City Prayer Community
Leeds City Prayer Community is a city centre space for worship and intercession in Leeds. It is also a community of believers who are responding to the calling of Isaiah 62:1, to ‘not keep silent … to not rest … until the salvation [of our God] shines like the dawn’. (During the year we changed our name from Leeds Ecumenical House of Prayer.)
From our beginnings we thought that God was calling us to pray somewhere in the heart of the city (Psalm 122:1-2) and, after a little wandering in desert lands, in autumn 2018 we arrived at Leeds Church Institute (LCI) on New Market Street, LS1 6DG (see entry on Thurs 4th April). We want to proclaim God as who He is and to ask for His blessings on all that goes on in and around Leeds city centre (Psalm 27:4) – asking for His blessings upon businesses, faith communities, shoppers, transport links and mercy ministries in the city.
Leeds City Prayer Community meets from 5.45—6.45pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday each week—i.e. at the end of the office working day—in the LCI Library. Anyone is welcome to join us, indeed, we seek to be an open and evolving community of people who want to pray with others for Leeds. We often sing, we sometimes use our own liturgy, but we mostly use extemporary prayer, aiming to respond to the Spirit’s promptings. It is a very mixed group of people—in respect of the church tradition, background and ethnicity of those who come. We believe God wants it to be like this and it allows us to touch the unity referred to in Psalm 133 and John 17:22. We pray expectantly, believing that even a few people praying regularly with conviction is enough to change the spiritual realities on the city.
Leeds City Prayer Community in 2019
LCI have been welcoming and generous by offering us use of their space, but we want to pay our way. We start 2019 with a small regular income, but would like to increase that to honour our hosts and enable us to invest in our internet presence and network effectively. We enjoy close working relationships with Pray 4 Leeds and 24/7 Prayer UK. We hope to build on these partnerships during the year.
Pray that God would lift up those ancient spiritual doors into the city—that all who worship, work, shop or visit the city centre might be blessed with an increasing sense of the presence of the living God.
Please pray for Leeds City Prayer Community this year: ·
- that God would continue to raise up more committed intercessors to share in this ministry ·
- that God would provide all that the ministry needs to grow and pursue its vision with ever greater vigour ·
- for the health of the core team and Steering Group, that they would all be able to fully embrace their calling to this ministry
