Jesus could have avoided his execution. By the time it was happening, it seems he had known about it for some time. He could simply have run away; maybe been a little less challenging. He even had an army of angels at his disposal. He only had to call.
The crucifixion is a stark reminder—a warning—that if we’re not careful, those things that brought it about take power. What drives a group of people to demand the death of an innocent man? Terrifyingly, things that drive us too: fear of losing control, of humiliation, of being discredited, of losing status, of disorder and chaos, of disturbing the status quo; rage against that which shakes our own conscience; fear of not appearing to do one’s duty or even of angering a misperceived God.
Thankfully – GRACE FULLy – Jesus didn’t run away. We needed another reminder – that: ‘…if the Son sets [us] free, [we] will be free indeed.’ (John 8:36)
And the Son does set us free.
