From humble beginnings in a shed in Argyll, Mary’s Meals began in 2002 by feeding 200 school children in Malawi. The charity now feeds more than 1.5 million hungry children in 18 countries every school day. Children like Yvonne, from Malawi. She says: “When I have eaten, I can listen attentively in class, and understand what the teacher is saying.”
Mary’s Meals brings together people of all faiths and none, it was his Catholic faith that inspired founder Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow and the naming of the charity in honour of Mary, the Mother of Jesus.
Although our programmes are all abroad, we have plenty going on in Leeds! We have many volunteers, churches and schools who support our work and I hope they get almost as much out of being part of the movement as the children do! We also have a Leeds office and are really trying to get more Leeds people involved in our mission.
‘Children, our love must be not just words or mere talk, but something active and genuine.’ 1 John 3:17-18
