The Beehive Fair Trade shop in Chapel Allerton has been running as a voluntary organisation for over 18 years. We sell Fairtrade products, mainly sourced from the Christian company Traidcraft, and support Fairtrade in a number of church congregations and schools in Leeds.
However, Traidcraft has considerably reduced its range of products as a result of recent financial difficulties. This, together with the retirement of some of our volunteers after years of service, has made the continuation of The Beehive unviable, and we have taken the difficult decision to close the shop from 31st March 2019.
We will continue to trade as usual until then and hope to continue supplying church congregations and schools with stalls on a Sale or Return basis. To do this we are seeking premises where stock can be stored and as a base to work from.
We will also be running our Café and Fair on March 2nd at Chapel Allerton Methodist Centre and attending the University Fairtrade Fair on March 5th, as part of Fairtrade Fortnight.
We are all aware that Trade Justice is far from achieved and the work of Traidcraft, on a smaller scale, and of its charity – arm Traidcraft Exchange, is vitally important, especially at a time when many countries, including our own, seem to be more inward looking.
Please pray for the future of Fair Trade in Leeds, that Leeds’ church congregations will rise to the challenge of Trade Injustice; that individual Christians will respond to the need for more volunteers for Fairtrade in our city.
